ASBESTOS

Many years ago, some water pipes were made of asbestos. These pipes are now old and have been replaced by those of a different material, mainly polyvinyl chloride (PVC). WASA's approach to asbestos pipes is to leave them in the ground where they cause no harm.

It is in trying to remove them that persons are placed at risk as asbestos particles may become airborne. However, should its removal become absolutely necessary, proper protective clothing is worn and constant wetting of the surface is done to prevent particles from becoming airborne.
